This site is dedicated to 19th-century photographer,

William Roe Howell.

William Howell was a prominent New York City portrait photographer who took many celebrity photos during the 1870s.

Unfortunately, he died when he was only 44, so he never gained the name recognition that past photographers have attained such as Mathew Brady.

This is Howell posing at his New York City studio ca. 1870. (Photograph courtesy Anthony Dale, Howell's great-great grandson.)
